Pacific Cup Fleet Daily Positions

or the 2016 Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Hawaii, I needed a reliable way to download the fleet position information and display using common Windows or iOS based navigation programs while underway and offshore.  In the past, the fleet position information is broadcast during the daily morning check-in process.  With this information, navigators would manually plot the daily fleet position.  Recently, offshore races have been using YellowBrick Tracker devices on each boat to automatically record the fleet's position during the race.  Thus, the fleet information is available online.

In addition to the online 2016 fleet positions, text data is also available.  To download this data while underway, I developed two versions of a server based script, written in PHP and Python.  Both versions extract the boat position data (boat-id,latitude, longitude), link to their boat-names and racing division, and output either a GPX or INI file.  The PHP version sends the email with the waypoints attached, twice a day.

Having the fleet  position data delivered to our onboard email account provided valuable fleet information.

To keep spirits up during the race, I included a random quote of the day in each email! I looked forward to the daily email with the fleet's position and an inspirational or funny quote!

Some years ago  never mind how long precisely  having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. H. Melville, Opening Line from Moby Dick
